Moroccan king appoints consultation council for Sahara affairs
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 3/27/2006
The Moroccan king has appointed members of the consultation council for the Sahara affairs. They number 140 members including 14 women. The council is composed of tribal chieftains and representatives of organizations of the civil society.
By these appointments, King Muhammad VI revives structures of the council which was established by the late King al-Hassan II in 1981. The Moroccan king asked the consultation council for the western Sahara affairs to submit proposals over the self rule project for the Sahara which al- Rabat will submit to the UN shortly.
In a speech he delivered on Saturday in al-Oyoun, king Muhammad said "we call on our faithful citizen, children of the southern districts to fully think of their perceptions of a self-rule system project, in the context of the Kingdom's sovereignty and its national and territorial integrity."
He also called on the council to propose all "initiatives for the return back and merging of our citizens held in Tindof camps," in remarks to the Sahara prisoners who are detained by the Polisario front in camps to the southern west of Algeria.
In that speech, the Moroccan king said that the Moroccan government will start a large scale consultation operation for parties and people of the Sahara in order to know their views and proposals concerning the self- rule system of the southern districts.
