Morocco, Politics, 3/27/2006
The Moroccan king Muhammad IV has taken a series of steps aiming to strengthen the self rule project of the southern districts as a solution for the conflict over the Sahara which he had proposed in the last day of his visit to the region which lasted for five days.
In conclusion of this visit, King Muhammad IV had taken a series of steps aiming at strengthening the self rule project for the southern district as a solution for the conflict over the "Moroccan identity of the Sahara" which he had proposed in the last day of his visit to the region which lasted for five days.
King Muhammad IV issued in conclusion of that visit a pardon to 216 Sahara detainees including 30 political and social activists who were in al-Oyoun prison, Oyoun being the largest governorate of the Sahara, with most of them general right prisoners.
Those released activists demand the right to self determination for the western Sahara. They were detained after violent demonstrations in May and October 2005 on charge of "organizing unlicensed demonstrations and the use of violence against state sector employees."
Among the released persons were Ali Salem Tamik who was sentenced for ten months in January this year.
