On the formation of the Hamas government
Palestine, Politics, 3/24/2006
Internal Palestinian controversy continued over the formation of the Palestinian government led by Hamas and its program.
The chairman of the political bureau of Hamas, Khaled Mashaal said that the decision taken by the PLO executive committee which demands the change of the Hamas government program is not proper and called in a statement to al-Jazeera TV on Thursday for rebuilding the PLO so as to include all Palestinian forces.
The spokesman for the Palestinian presidency Nabil Abu Rudinah said that there is no legitimacy for any Palestinian government that does not recognize the legitimacy nor the sole role represented by the PLO. He also stressed that the PLO is the maker of the political decisions and the sole and legitimate representative for the Palestinian people. The PLO claims for itself to be the sole representative of the Palestinians and has recognized Israel, while Hamas rejects to recognize Israel, and sees itself as a representative of the Palestinians as a result of the democratically held-elections which it has won.
This came after an announcement made by Hamas that the PLO executive committee has no right to interfere in the government's program.
President Abbas and the chairman of the Palestinian legislative council Aziz al-Dweik agreed to convene the PLO council next Monday in order to discuss the program of the new government chaired by Ismael Henya and to vote confidence on it.
While member of the executive committee for the Democratic Front For The Liberation Of Palestine, Teiser Khaled, supported the position of the committee concerning the government statement, member of the political bureau of the People Front For The Liberation Of Palestine, Maher al-Taher, said that his government will vote in favor of granting confidence for the government.
