Gunmen killed in clash with UN forces in southern Sudan
Sudan-Uganda, Politics, 3/23/2006
Three gunmen were killed in clashes with the UN forces in southern Sudan. This is in the first incident of this kind since the deployment of the UN forces in the region.
An official at the UN said that an attack targeted a position for the UN forces in southern Sudan. Most possibilities indicate that Ugandan rebels are behind the attack and this pushed the UN peace keeping forces to the exchange fire with them.
The UN official indicated that two of the peace keeping soldiers were injured in Yamibo area near the border with the democratic republic of Congo.
Worthy mentioning that there are some 10,000 UN soldiers are deployed in southern Sudan with the aim to monitor the implementation of the peace agreement which was signed in 2005 and ended the longest civil war in Africa.
The rebels of "al-Rab (God) army for resistance" in Uganda who have been for many years resorting to neighboring southern Sudan intensified their attacks against civilians in recent weeks.
