Scores killed in Iraq
Iraq, Military, 3/23/2006
Acts of violence which took place in various parts of Iraq resulted in killing scores yesterday including members of the Iraqi police at a time when the Iraqi security forces could detain several suspects over their involvement in certain armed acts.
The most violent acts were those resulted in killing 15 of visitors of the holy Shiite shrines. Iraqi security sources explained on Wednesday that the cloths of the killed persons and the banners they had indicated that the bodies were for visitors of the Shiite holy shrines after their return back from Karabala to Baghdad after celebrating Imam al-Hussein assassination anniversary.
News reports said that the Iraqi security sources interfered after the incident and as a result two policemen were killed and other 6 injured after American forces had arrived to besiege the place.
One of the wounded persons in the attack which was launched by gunmen said that the worshippers of al-Kubeisi mosque in Baghdad where the attack took place near it rescued them after the security forces men did not respond to their appeals.
It is hard to gage the accuracy of the allegations of killings based on religious motivation, because there are indications that many have an interest in promoting such a view, or seek to inflame the situation by such killings, ever since Iraqis seems to have started increasingly drift toward viewing themselves thru their religious affiliation for identity and affiliation.
Other persons were killed and scores injured in various acts of violence in each of Baghdad and al-Baya area west of Karbala, al-Madaen and Basra.
Meantime, security sources said that the American and Iraqi forces detained scores of gunmen following clashes lasted two hours near a police center west of Baghdad.
In Baqouba northeast of Baghdad, one military source announced the detention of 17 persons including 12 gunmen and five suspects during breaking in operations launched by the Iraqi army at Arab Jabbar area situation south of Khan Bani Saad south of Baqouba.
