Earthquake hits east Algeria

Four persons at least were killed and other 36 injured in an earthquake which hit areas in Bajaya district situated 300 km east of the Algerian capital on Monday evening.
The Algerian radio said that the earthquake was 5.8 degree on the Richter scale. The radio also quoted one eyewitness saying that the quake left 7 persons killed and destroyed four buildings in al-Alam village.
The Algerian center for physics, geo-physics and cosmology research, said that the earthquake took place at 20.44 hour local time ( 19.44 GMT). It explained that the center of the earthquake is near Kharata city between Bajaya and Steif.
Algiers and its surrounding areas were exposed on May 21, 2003 to a violent earthquake resulted in killing 2300 persons and injuring more than 10,000.
