Hakim call for a central Iraq's district
Iraq, Politics, 3/21/2006

Concerning the current consultations to form a new government which are stand still, the chairman of the Higher Council For The Islamic Revolution (Shiite) in Iraq, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, renewed his demand to establish "central and south Iraq" district.

Hakim, who is the chairman of the United Iraqi Coalition list (with 128 parliamentarian majority) said in a statement on the occasion of the assassination anniversary of Imam al-Hussein that the establishment of this district will facilitate "fighting terrorism," accusing what he called the "Saddamists, and the Takfiri (those who hold others as non believers) of trying to set ablaze 'a sectarian war fire'."

Hakim's call comes at a time when meetings for forming the government were suspended for one week, while authorities of the national security council that the parliamentary blocs agreed to form were not settled.

The Kurdish parliamentarian Mahmoud Othman said during Sunday's meetings between president Jalal al-Talibani and heads of the winning blocs that general principles were agreed upon over the formation of the national security council without reaching a final agreement on its authorities.

The council will be composed of 19 members, nine from the Shiite coalition and 4 from the Kurdistani coalition and three from al-Tawafuk front, two from the Iraqi List and one from the national dialogue. The President of the republic and the prime minister, his two deputies and the speaker of the parliament and his deputies will be among the 19 members.
