AP report: Lebanon president calls for early elections
Lebanon, Politics, 3/20/2006
An Associated Press report quoted Lebanon's president Emile Lahoud telling al-Jazeera satellite TV on Saturday that he would accept early parliamentary elections as a mean to decide his fate, and such a new parliament can select a new president, otherwise, he is intent on finishing his term of office.
The Associated Press said the anti-Syrian opposition block in the parliament no longer holds the great majority they did previously, in light of the emergence of new alliances.
The report noted that Lahoud reiterated support for the resistance to keep its weapons, and that his statement comes in the midst of inter-Lebanese discussions that also deal with the desire of some to see him resign office.
