Iranian views of the talks with US over Iraq
Iraq-Iran-USA, Politics, 3/18/2006

Iran should speak with the US from the standpoint of power, said an Iranian lawmaker today.

"If Iran opens the chapter of dialogue with the US from the standpoint of power, it will serve as a positive point for the country," said member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission at Majlis Hamid-Reza Haji-Babaie in an interview with IRNA when asked to comment on Iran's readiness to talk with the US on Iraq on a request by the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution of Iraq (SCIRI) Seyyed Abd al-Aziz Hakim.

Haji-Babaie said the dialogue will be a positive step when Tehran would be able to move powerfully to end Iraqi occupation, foil US plots in the region, scale down Washington's pressure on Tehran, end US intervention in Iran, consolidate the Islamic Republic of Iran's establishment and strengthen the Iraqi government.

He said Iran's geopolitical condition in the region, Tehran's close ties with Iraqi statesmen and the call of Ayatollah Hakim, an Iraqi religious leader, from Iran to open dialogue with the US would play a significant role in ending the ongoing dispute in Iraq.

"The US is facing a stalemate and is in a tense condition in its attempt to solve Iraqi issues," commented Haji-Babaie.

Iran should benefit from the opportunity to both consolidate Iraq's Islamic government and cut short the US hand in Iraq, he said.

It seems all the political and security arrangements for opening the talks have been drawn out, he added.

Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said on Thursday that Iran has welcomed Abd al-Aziz Hakim's proposal for talks with the US on Iraq.

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki too said on Friday that Iran will talks with the US on Iraq in line with its assistance to Iraq and the government-building process there.

Today, Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said that Iran gave major importance to restoration of peace and stability in Iraq. He said that Tehran would seriously try to help Iraq's democratic interim government establish an independent and stable government and "All US, British and other occupying forces have to leave Iraq as no stability or peace will result from their continued presence in the country."
