Sudan optimistic on Darfur peace agreement by April
Sudan, Politics, 3/18/2006
The Sudanese government said it is optimistic over the possibility of reaching a peace agreement in April with the two main rebel movements in Darfur area west of the country.
The Sudanese foreign minister Laam Akol Ajawin said that a new detailed proposal for ceasing fire proposed by the African Union to the warring sides last week will enable it to achieve peace promptly.
He explained to journalists in Nairobi that the African Union is very optimistic and confident that a solution for the crisis in Darfur will be reached before the end of next April.
Akool renewed the government's declared position towards the deployment of UN forces in Darfur, saying that the government will welcome UN forces after a peace agreement is reached in the area.
He considered that deployment of such a force before reaching a peace agreement will mean the end of the talks which are being held at the mediation of the African Union in Nigeria (implying possibly because the rebels will feel strengthened and less motivated for a compromise under such presence). The negotiations are with the two main rebel groups which are al-Adel Wal-Musawat movement and the Sudan's Liberation Movement.
