Virginia art school announced Arab girl winners of design competition

A celebration was held on March 15 at the Damascus Four Season hotel during which three Syrian girls won three entries, in 1st place was Gawa Sameer Helal from al-Maouna school for Girls, in the 2nd place was Sandra Sohel Qastoon also from al-Maouna school for girls and Ellen Martinaz from Damascus community school.
The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar announced the winners of the first phase of the 2006 "Be here: design Now" competition.
The judging took place at VCUQ on February 13, 2006. Winning entries were judged by w world- class jury made of the representatives from the Qatari government, Qatar Foundation Vice President Abdullah al-Thani, representatives from Sabban Property Investments, Dakhil al-Anzi from the Ministry of education in Kuwait, Arts faculty from VCUQ.
Various other VCUQ officials attended the judging and reception including Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Charles Bleick, VCUQ, Events project coordinator Donna Duffett and VCUQ Recruitment Officer, Dima Salameh.
From the 150 participants, three semi finalists from each of the ten Arab states were chosen and will receive cash prizes, generously provided by Sabbab property investments. The three winners from each country will now move on the second phase of the competition in which two- full four year scholarships to attend VCUQ will be won by the two finalists. The scholarships for creativity to attend VCUQ are generously provided by her highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al-Missned, the chairperson of the Qatar Foundation.
"This year, participating entries from Qatar were of high standard, the quality was better than we have seen in previous years. We received some very nice projects and each of them followed the instructions that were given to them," said Dima Salameh, VCUQ recruitment Officer.
Building bonds was the theme of the first phase of the 2005/ 2006 " be Here design now" competition provided by Mr. Issam al-Sabban, Chairman and CEO of Sabban Property Investments, which are the developers of the Sabban Towers in the The Pearl- Qatar.
Leading on from the "Be Here Design Now's theme of building bonds, the themes for the second phase of the competition has taken this idea a step further and we are now looking for what comes next" Salameh added.
Nevertheless, VCUQ offers specialized programs in various design professions. Students have the opportunity of earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in communication, fashion on interior design. A team of highly qualified professors provide rigorous curricula that prepare students to assume leadership roles in the professional field of their choice. VCUQ regularly organizes and hosts exhibitions, gallery events, world-class design conferences and holds an annual fashion show. VCUQ is supported and funded by the Qatar foundation.
