Brunik pessimistic on Darfur situation
Sudan-UN, Politics, 3/17/2006

The representative of the UN secretary general Kofi Annan to Sudan Yan Brunik described the situation in Darfur as "raising pessimism" and deplored the occurrence of daily fighting in Darfur.

Brunik described the events in Darfur as "a tribal cleansing," noting that gunmen riding camels are launching attacks against villages of the southern district and this led to the killing of some 400 persons since February.

The UN official warned against that the security situation will witness more deterioration and peace will not be established, noting simultaneously that so far no progress has been achieved in the Abuja negotiations between the government and the rebels.

The UN said that one person was killed and two others injured in an attack launched by gunmen against a complex for the UNHCR in southern Sudan. The armed attack came at a time when controversy increased over the intervention of UN forces in Darfur region west of the country where Khartoum rejects such interference.

Ali Othman Taha, the Sudanese vice president, said in statements on Wednesday that his country opposes the deployment of a UN force before a peace agreement is signed, stressing that his country will not accept "the UN violation of national sovereignty."

He also stressed that Sudan rejects that the International Criminal Court will try Sudanese suspected over accusation of being involved in crimes linked to the conflict in Darfur.
