Saddam for expelling invaders as trial adjourns
Iraq, Politics, 3/16/2006
The chairman of the special Iraqi court in the al-Dajil case decided yesterday to postpone the trial of the toppled Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and seven of his aides until April 5th.
Saddam and before his half brother Barazan al-Takriti made a long testimony in session number 17. Judge Raouf Rasheed Abdul Rahman ordered by the end the session to be close door, considering that Saddam's testimony is a political speech and has no links to the case.
In his statement, Saddam said he is still the President of Iraq who was constitutionally elected by the Iraqis according to the results of the last referendum. He described the trial as "a comedy for Saddam Hussein and his colleague." He called on the Iraqi people for national unity and to start resisting the invaders instead of internal fighting.
Saddam urged the Iraqis to avert the civil war "otherwise they will live in darkness and sea of blood." He also talked about the blowing up the two shrines in Samara and the followed incidents of burning mosques. He said that the Iraqi people innocent free from these acts and that "the bleeding of the Iraqi people will only increase the determination and the will to expel the foreigners under all names.. there are killing and stealing crimes starting with blowing up the two Islamic shrines of Imams al-Hadi and al-Askari."
The toppled president added "therefore I call upon the Iraqis women and men to give up injuring each other and not to loose the way in chasing the killers being local or foreigners."
But the judge interrupted Saddam saying "you are accused .. defend yourself .. this very role ended now. What you are saying is just a political rhetoric .. we as a court do not interfere in politics."
However, Saddam said "without politics what had brought me and you here." Immediately this tension was converted to controversial exchange, as the judge told Saddam that he is accused in a criminal case.
