Iraqi leader asks for Iran - US talks on Iraq
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 3/16/2006
The leader of the United Iraqi Coalition, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, called on Iran to open dialogue with the USA for the interests of the Iraqi people.
A source close to Abdul Aziz quoted his call during a speech he had delivered in eulogizing victims of explosions in al-Sader city which resulted in killing 46 Iraqis and injuring 204 last Sunday that it is not accepted that Iraq will be converted into a base for conspiracies against surrounding countries, stressing the need of evacuating the country from the terrorist groups which have problems with the surrounding states.
The American ambassador in Baghdad Zalmay Khalilzad announced five days earlier his readiness to discuss with Iran their differences on Iraq. The American ambassador said that Iran and Iraq are neighbors and Washington can not change geography, as he alleged.
Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani today voiced Iran's readiness to hold talks with the US on Iraqi issues telling the Iranian Majlis (parliament) Tehran accepts request made by Hakim to negotiate with Washington on Iraq.
Since the call is made by a prominent Iraqi Muslim leader, Tehran accepts it in order to resolve problems in Iraq and to help establish an independent government and real freedom in that country, Larijani noted. "We will appoint a negotiating team for talks soon," he announced.
