Russia, Syria to counter arms trafficking in Middle East, Lavrov says

Russia and Syria are to work together to counter arms trafficking in the Middle East, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We have agreed to work together to prevent and to stop illegal arms trafficking in the region, including in Palestine and Iraq," Lavrov said at a briefing after negotiations with his Syrian counterpart Walid Muaallem.

The situation in Iraq was also discussed, the Russian Foreign Minister said. "We support Iraqi efforts to create a government with nationwide backing and we are sure that these efforts will profit from external support, from their neighbors, the Arab League and the United Nations Security Council," Lavrov said.

"Russia's proposals are well known, they remain on the agenda and we are thankful to Syria for its consistent support," the minister said.

Russia highly assesses measures taken by Syria to prevent its territory being used to deploy militants in Iraq, Lavrov said.

"We are concerned over the situation in Iraq and we are sure that the main thing is to begin dialog in the country in order to find a way to achieve national reconciliation," he said.
