Free Media Zone launches in Damascus

Syria's Information Ministry, the General Est. for Free Zones and the General Establishment for Exhibitions and International Markets announced yesterday the launching of Syria's first free media city at the Damascus Int. Fairgrounds.

Deputy Information Minister Taleb Qadi Amin said in a press conference that the city is a fruit of the governments desire to develop media performance and to use true information in the service the country and citizens.

The information Ministry will be in charge of giving initial approval to any media activity, according to the set up conditions.

Director of the General Establishment for free zone Adnan Suleiman said the media city will be governed by Syria's free zone rules and will cover media activities only. The city will also benefit from decree No. 40 of 2003 which allows the entrance of equipment and all requirement of a media establishment free of charge.

Head of the G. Establishment for Exhibitions and International Markets, Imad al-Zubi, referred that the city is part of the Damascus Fairgrounds.

The Establishment will be responsible for ensuring the infrastructure and all services. The city will spread over 65, 000 square meters and will be divided to 56 blocks. Each block will be spread over 500-100-square meters.
