Two pending Lebanese issues in internal dialogue
Lebanon, Politics, 3/15/2006
The speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri explained that when the inter- Lebanese dialogue will be resumed, two main issues will be discussed that are not agreed upon so far. The issue of the removal of the president which the parliamentary majority calls for, and the issue of dismantling the weapons of Hizbullah as called for by the UN Security Council resolution no. 1559.
Before its resumption on Sunday, the inter- Lebanese dialogue seemed on the edge of collapse after statements made by the opposition parliament member and Druze leader Walid Junblat who had left the conference in order to meet with senior high ranking American officials had called from there for dismantling the weapons of Hizbullah.
Berri who also takes part in his capacity as a leader for the Shiite Amal movement said that after the second round of talks which the conferees held on Monday and Tuesday, the session was adjourned until March 22nd.
Worthy mentioning that the sessions were held in the presence of the top leaders in the parties and blocs, and only absent from attending was the parliamentarian Ghassan Tweini who represents the Orthodox and this was due to health reasons.
The inter-Lebanese dialogue had resumed on Monday amid warnings that failure in ending the political crisis, which erupted following the assassination of the former Prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri in February 2005, will inflect damage in the stumbled economy and expand the gap of political differences in the country.
