Lebanese leaders to announce national dialog results
Lebanon, Politics, 3/14/2006

The speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri promised to brief the Lebanese today with matters he described as important.

This was expressed in briefed statements by the end of the first day of the second phase of the Lebanese national dialogue conference which was resumed on Monday after several day suspension because of differences among the participants in the dialogue.

The leader of the parliamentary majority and al-Mustaqbal trend parliamentarian, Saad al-Hariri, said in press statements on Monday that positive results will be announced today, noting that the political leaderships want to find solutions for all debated issues.

Political sources said that the leaders taking part in the dialogue reached an initial agreement to dismantle the weapons of the Palestinian groups outside the 12 Palestinian camps in Lebanon.

The sources indicated that it was also initially approved to establish full diplomatic relations with Syria to demarcate borders from the north to the south but this is not to include the occupied Shabaa farms in the first phase in which the participants in the dialogue discussed means of proving Shabaa's Lebanese identity.

Each of the Druze leader Walid Junblat and the secretary general of the Lebanese Hizbullah party Hassan Nasrullah had documents and maps supporting his view point in this case.

One well informed politician said that "the discussions concerning Shabaa Farms achieved progress towards a unanimous position to that Shabaa is a Lebanese land but still this matter has to be proved especially at the UN."

Lebanese sources expected that the Lebanese political leaders will reach an agreement approving that Shabaa Farms are Lebanese. A matter which will legitimize Hizbullah's keeping of its weapons. However, the Lebanese are still split over liberating these farms either by the armed force or via diplomatic channels.
