Two women in Yemeni presidential elections
Yemen, Politics, 3/14/2006
The Yemeni Islamic writer and activist Rashida al-Qabali announced her nomination for the presidential elections in Yemen in September this year, while the main opposition parties have not yet decided on the nomination of its candidate.
The ruling party announces that its candidate is the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh despite his persistence he is not seeking office again and by that he leaves the door open before several possibilities.
Though politicians and businessmen announced their nomination including Abdul Rahman al-Beidani the first vice President in Yemen and the opposition member Abdullah Salam al-Hukeimi and business man Tawfiq al-Khamiri announced their nomination for the election, however, the Yemeni public does not consider such announcement seriously and considers that real rivalry is between the candidates of the ruling party and the opposition parties.
Moreover, Sumaya Ali Rajaa, daughter of a former diplomat announced her intention to nominate herself for the Yemeni presidential elections. She said in a press statement that her decision came from the legally and constitutionally guaranteed rights and because women in Yemen constitute 50% of the population and the need to "revive non western democratic values on the Yemeni society."
