Saddam's vice president says he was tortured
Iraq-USA, Politics, 3/14/2006
The toppled Iraqi vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan stressed that he was greatly tortured after his detention by the American forces in 2003 for more than three weeks.
This was confirmed during the testimony given by Ramadan before the Iraqi criminal court which is trying him over the case of al-Dajil incident in which the toppled Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and several former officials are being tried.
Saddam's deputy detailed the process of torture he had undergone that started as from August until September 9th, 2003. He explained that the torture concentrated to force on threee issues: To reveal the place of Saddam's hiding before he was arrested, to cooperate with the American forces as an agent as well as their requests about the "Iraqi resistance" in Baghdad and Musil.
Ramadan notified the court's judge that adding his name within the Dajil case was just a made-up accusation by the main witness Waddah al-Sheikh who died earlier during the convening of the court, and that he was not in Dajil and was not then assigned by the Iraqi leadership of any missions in that area.
He described al-Sheikh as "corrupt" and that he was removed from his position and sentenced for 27 year imprisonment. He also said who al-Sheikh was transferred, a member in the former intelligence, from an accused to a witness. He considered that this change in how al-Sheikh is considered came after he accepted to give his testimony against Ramadan.
The judge asked about Ramadan's role in his being a commander for the people's army, an almost military organization, in al-Dajil incidents, and he replied that there was no role for this force in these incidents.
