Sudan welcomes African Union decision on forces in Darfur

An Egyptian government report noted that Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit said that Egypt welcomes, in principle, the decision of the African Union to transfer the AU forces mission in Darfur, Sudan, to UN forces, noting the resolution stresses "the necessity of Khartoum endorsing" such a transfer if it is to occur.

He urged all parties to come to a solution, and asked the international community to help.

Meantime, JANA noted that "Sudan has welcomed the decision of the African Union's Peace and Security Council to extend the mission of the AU peace keeping force in Darfur to the 30th of September 2006."

"In press statements (yesterday) the Sudanese foreign minister Lam Akol described the decision as a gain for Sudan for it realized what it had been asking for He pointed out that the decision regarded as a lesson for those who believed that the African Union can be run from far away."
