Jaafari: we should seek consensus and not unilaterism
Iraq, Politics, 3/13/2006
The Iraqi prime minister whose term of office expired Ibrahim al-Jaafari said that differences will be settled among the Iraqi political sides over the formation of the new government, in reliance on the Iraqi constitution.
He explained in a brief statement following his meeting with Talibani on Sunday "we will try to overcome the obstacles in a democratic way rather than coersion, dictatorship or unilateralism," noting that responding to all differences will be according to the constitution and that the coming days will prove that.
Jaafari considered that there is no political crisis in Iraq because of his nomination for leading the government. He added he does not consider himself a side in any crisis, noting that his nomination was made democratically and this should be honored.
Consultations are still continuous among the political groups in order to form the new government in light of the results of the elections which took place in mid December 2005, in light of the opposition by the Kurds, the Sunnis and the bloc of the former Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi for the nomination of Jaafari as a prime minister for the next government.
