Fewer insurgents enter Iraq from Syria
Syria-Iraq-USA, Politics, 3/9/2006
On the reason fewer insurgents are crossing the border from Syria into Iraq these days to take part in attacks on Iraqi targets, a senior State Department official said the United States believed this was mainly due to US and Iraqi military operations.
The official acknowledged, however, that Syrian steps such as changing visa rules at airports for young men could also be helping in slowing down in the number of persons infiltrating from Syria to Iraq to fight the American force.
Even though Syria gets all the attention about these fighters, some in the US had put the figure as high as 40 percent of those suicide bombers crossing into Iraq as being Saudi Arabians, and get no attention over that. Worth noting, that Syria has a generous border entry requirements to Arab nationals, due to the Syrian pan-Arab ideals. However, some see that this privilege is being used by some as a loophole to enter Iraq thru Syria, with Syria getting the blame as a result.
