Al-Baz: Mubarak will retire when finds a successor
Egypt, Politics, 3/8/2006

Osama al-Baz, the political advisor for the Egyptian president, said that President Hosni Mubarak welcomes retirement when he finds a successor.

He added in a press interview that the family of the Egyptian president does not think of introducing Jamal, the son of the President ( 42 year old), to succeed the father.

Baz explained that "Mubarak will remain in office as far as he is able and capable, but if he finds that there are those who are ready to carry the torch, my feeling is that he welcomes that."

He added "it is not so far clear who can assume the post of the President, but it is sure that the President and his family do not think of inheriting the rule to Jamal and he does not give himself any more rights than rights given to other Egyptians."

Mubarak, who has been president of Egypt since 1981, will be 78 year old in May this year. Jamal Mubarak, who has worked for several years in the banking field, has assumed the two posts of the assistant secretary general of the ruling Democratic National Party and the secretary of the party's policies.

Leaders of the opposition said that they are convinced that Mubarak's family are planning to make Jamal President through the Democratic National Party as the best vehicle for this under the currently circumstance.

Muhammad Habib, deputy general guide (leader) for the opposition Muslim Brothers expected Jamal to seek to occupy the post within two years, under the continued control of the national party.

On February 1st Mubarak made changes in the leadership of the Democratic National Party that covered raising Jamal to the post of the assistant secretary general of the party. He has been assuming the post of the secretary for policies in the said party since 2002.

The national party has a favorable majority in the parliament despite the fact that the opposition Muslim Brothers occupies 88 of its seats.
