Iran adamant about its full rights to enrichment
Iran-UN, Politics, 3/6/2006

Iran's Representative to the UN nuclear watchdog Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said today that talks on Iran's nuclear activities are still continuing in Vienna.

Speaking to IRNA on the sidelines of the first seasonal meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he added that Iran can show no flexibility on its nuclear research, given that any country whose scholars have the capability to conduct research is entitled to such a right.

He said "Meanwhile, since the former (IAEA) resolution was approved on account of Iran's nuclear research it is impossible to suspend research and development in the field."

IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei today spoke to the press about Iran's nuclear program, before the opening of the Agency's Board of Governors meeting in Vienna this week. He told reporters that during the IAEA's inspections, it had not seen indications of diversion of nuclear material to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.

Yet, despite these stated facts about Iran not having violated the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, the IAEA once again showed itself to be a political entity, and not a technical entity that is supposed to look at the facts. Instead, the head of agency spoke about politics and economics in the Middle East as part of finding a solution to this problem. He said "The only solution I see is a comprehensive agreement that covers the nuclear issue, the security issue, the economic issue and political issue."

It is not clear why a technical agency, whose role is merely to be a watchdog to determine scientifically if violations are occurring or not, and it affirmed that Iran is not violating the treaty, would delve in politics and economics. However, that could be a clear evidence that such agency is playing a political role and is impotent to do little more that talk about politics and economics, when the issue is a clear cut issue of compliance or not, and Iran is in clear compliance.

The efforts to take away Iran's rights seem multifaceted, from trying to force Iran to accept only small amount of uranium enrichment on its soil, to complete stoppage. Iran has said it does not want anything more than its rights under the treaty. The US and others are seeking, under creative plans, to deprive Iran from its rights and from developing its scientific and industrial capabilities in this field. The US has stated previously and publicly that "one way or another" Iran will be made to comply with this objective. The IAEA has been forced to join the politics of this issue and is using these so-called negotiations as a leverage to deprive Iran from its rights, by the IAEA joining the double talk of the US and Europeans of saying "Iran is compliant and is not in violation and Iran has full rights to enrichment" but, "Iran should negotiate about these rights, and should stop its nuclear enrichment," so that "we" can have "confidence building measures."

Iran's representative to the UN agency said Iran will continue to cooperate with the agency, but "We shall continue both nuclear research and development."
