Talibani: national unity necessitates Jaafari step aside

The Iraqi president whose term of office whose term of office expired said that the intention behind his call on Ibrahim al-Jaafari to quit office was not made for personal reasons, rather his care to maintain national unity and because this very step may convince other sides to join a national unity government that can prevent a civil war in Iraq.

Talibani, on the other hand, called on all gunmen who are not linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to give up weapons and to understand that their interest is not in fighting the coalition forces, rather in taking part in the democratic process.

The Iraqi president disclosed that the American forces confirmed they will stay in Iraq as long as needed by the Iraqi government after the two UK dailies Sunday Telegraph and the Sunday Mirror quoted military officials as saying that Washington and London are planning to withdraw their forces by the fall of next spring because the foreign presence has become a problem in the face of establishing peace in Iraq.

For its part, South Korea announced it will reduce as from next month the number of its forces. South Korea forces rank thirsd in Iraq after the American and British forces.

The parliament of southern Korea ratified a government plan to reduce the number of forces deployed in Irbil from 3200 to 2300 troops starting in March and completed by the end of the current year. N.
