Meqdad: Syria is going on in enhancing women's role

Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad underlined Wednesday Syria's care for enhancing woman's position and role in the Syrian society, stressing the importance of activating her participation in all walks of life fields through removing obstacles that hinder her role so that justice can be ensured between women and man.

"Syria has ratified on the agreement that stipulates ending all forms of discrimination against the woman and has established the Syrian Board for Family Affairs in order to find the national mechanisms related to the woman and her rights," Meqdad said in a statement before the 50th session of the Commission on Status of Woman.

The Deputy Foreign Minister pointed out that Syria's 10th five-year plan for development will focus on human development in general and concentrate on many sides of woman's issues.

He underscored the necessity of figuring out a solution for the miserable situation the Arab women are suffering under the Israeli occupation in occupied Syrian Golan and the Palestinian territories, adding Beijing Conference on Woman has stressed that "the Israeli occupation deprive the Arab woman from her human rights."

Meqdad said that the Syrian woman under the Israeli occupation is deprived of her basic rights as education, heath care and work. "She shoulders bigger responsibility under such harsh circumstances as raising children, taking care of handicapped and she may be the only family provider because of her husband, son or father is under detention by the Israeli occupation forces," he stressed.

The deputy minister hailed the Syrian woman's steadfastness under the Israeli occupation.

He expressed at the end of his statement Syria's appreciation over the UN organizations' efforts in fields of woman's rights and development of laws to ensure woman's participation in all walks of life.
