Lebanese national reconciliation conference

The meetings of the various Lebanese groups, which was launched today and which the media was banned from attending, was held in one of the halls of the parliament in the center of Beirut.

It it to last between one week to ten day and is attended by 14 Muslim and Christian figures accounting for or against Syria. The figures include the prime minister Fouad Sinoura, Walid Junblat, the leader of the executive commission of the Lebanese forces Samir Jaajaa and the former Lebanese President Amin al-Gemayel as a representative for the phalangist party, parliamentarian Butrous Harb, a representative for Qurnet Shahwan former meeting, the secretary general of the Hizbullah party Hassan Nasrullah, and the chairman of the free national trend the parliamentarian Michael Aoun.

This conference was preceded by lengthy meetings between the Lebanese leaders, one of them lasted for seven hours between the leader of Hizbullah Hassan Nasrullah and the leader of the Lebanese majority Saad al-Hariri.

Berri and Michael Aoun described the atmosphere as positive and the UN secretary general Kofi Annan expressed his hope that this meeting will contribute to maintaining political stability in the country.

The Lebanese President Emil Lahoud was absent from the conference. He himself expressed his hope for the success of the conference because it is the "only road to solve the internal problems using dialogue among all Lebanese."

However, Lahoud warned in his meeting with a delegation representing the Chinese communist party from the attempt to dismantle the weapons of Hizbullah because this will "furnish for a civil war," and this matter is one of the main issues debated for discussions.
