Lebanese consensus on international court for Hariri assassination
Lebanon-Syria-UN, Politics, 3/3/2006

In the first national dialogue without a foreign mandate since the civil war 1975- 1990, groups of the Lebanese crisis agreed to accept the idea of an international court to look into the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.

The speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri who called for the meeting said that the participants agreed to accept an international court and to expand the missions of the investigation committee. A matter which was previously opposed by Hizbullah party and pushed the Shiite ministers to boycott meetings of the government in December 2005 after the government asked for that.

The meeting, whose launching delayed because of differences in the participation of smaller party that support for Syria, is studying main issues which are Syria's relations with Lebanon; UN Security Council resolution 1559 which states the election of the President must be without foreign intervention and the dismantling of the weapons of militias. A matter which is rejected by Hizbullah and the Amal movement, along with usingt he Hariri issue against Syria, considering that the Syria-Lebanon border demarcation and diplomatic representation issues can be solved under amicable atmosphere.
