Brazilian minister of education arrives in Damascus

Brazilian Minister of Education, Fernando Haddad, has expressed his country's desire to boost bilateral relations of cooperation with Syria in sphere of education.
In a statement to reporters upon his arrival at the Syrian-Lebanese borders on Tuesday, Haddad added that the aim of his visit was to sign numerous programs of cooperation in sphere of education and higher education.
For his part, Minister of Education, Ali Saad, who welcomed Haddad, said that during the visit of the Brazilian minister the executive program of the agreement which expires at the end of this year will be renewed until 2009.
The Brazilian minister is scheduled to meet with Minster of Higher Education, and Rector of Damascus University and delivers a lecture on the education system in Brazil.
On the other hand. Damascus university rector has discussed on Tuesday with Brazils Minister of Education and Cultivation prospects of providing aid to some Brazilian universities in field of teaching the Arabic language.
Rector of Damascus University Wael Muoalla and Brazilian Minister Fernando Haddad held talks today on best means to develop ties of scientific and cultural cooperation between Brazilian universities and Damascus University.
They also studied exchanging professors and cooperation in field of joint projects and research, together with the joint supervision on Master and Doctorate degrees.
There was a suggestion from Damascus University to open a department and center for the Portuguese language in each of the faculty of letters and the institution to teach language at the University of Damascus, sources accompanying the visiting delegation said.
Moualla expressed the university readiness to cooperate with Brazilian universities in various domains hoping that cooperation would include specialties of technology.
For his part, the Brazilian minister said the aim of the visit was to deepen cultural and scientific cooperation due to the presence of a big Syrian community in Brazil estimated at millions.
