Syrian FM receives Qatari official on Security Council issues
Syria-Qatar, Politics, 2/28/2006

Syria and Qatar, which is currently a member state at the UN Security Council, have discussed issues of mutual interests proposed on the UN Security Council.

During a meeting in Damascus Monday between foreign minister Walid al-Muaallem and Assistant of Qatari Foreign Minister for Follow-Up Affairs, Mohammed Abdullah al-Rumayhi, both sides focused on the necessity for continuing cooperation and coordination to maintain the Arab interests at the Security Council.

In a statement following the meeting, Rumayhi said that his meeting with Muaallem dealt with bilateral relations between the two states and Qatar's role in some international organizations.

He added that he discussed with the foreign minister a number of issues proposed on the Security Council connected with the region, the UN resolution No. 1559 and other issues related to the implementation of the international resolutions. Resolution 1559 relates to honoring Lebanon's sovereignty and dismantling the weapons of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias, in Lebanon.

The Qatari official asserted that the Syrian government is fully cooperating in this regard.

Qatar represents the Arab group at the membership of the Security Council.
