Sudan, Politics, 2/27/2006
The Sudanese deputy prime minister of south Sudan, Rayak Mushar, called on the Sudanese authorities to accept the deployment of UN forces in Darfur in order to replace the African forces.
Mushar, in his first stand contrary to the position of the Sudanese government, said that the African forces failed in performing its mission.
Commenting on these development, the spokesman for the UN Stefan De Jarik indicated that violence is still ongoing in Darfur. He explained that the proposal to dispatch a UN forces is attributed to the African Union force's lack of financial and technical resources to perform its mission.
In statements to al-Jazeera TV on Sunday, Jarik denied that the idea of dispatching UN forces is a Sudanese idea, stressing the importance that the government of Sudan will take a decision in this regard and to be convinced to accept the UN force.
