Saudi Arabia, Politics, 2/25/2006
Results of the elections of the commerce and industrial chamber of commerce in the eastern area in Saudi Arabia showed on Thursday that the 6 women candidates had lost their campaign to get a seat on the 12 seats in the chamber.
Worthy mentioning that it is the second time in which women were nominated to the elections of the chambers of commerce in Saudi Arabia. Earlier, business women won membership of the chairman of the board of directors of the Jeddah chamber of commerce in elections took place in 2005.
The chamber of commerce and industry in the eastern area in Saudi Arabia issued the names of the 12 winners with all of them are men.
Woman candidate Samia al-Idrisi said "we have lost, we had hope to get positive result," noting that she was among the first 438 women nominees for the elections.
Al-Idrisi expressed her hope that the minister of commerce who will appoint seven members, will appoint one woman in the board of directors in the chamber. She indicated that the participation of women in the elections made a great transformation among the 12,000 voters including among themselves, 500 women.
She disclosed that religious men in the chamber warned against voting for women and that the men who supported the women had lost. She said "we received messages on the Internet in which the men said that women should not be voted for," adding "the lists which included women were rejected."
