Hashemi: great conspiracy to destroy Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 2/25/2006

Commenting on developments taking place in Iraq, the secretary general of the Iraqi Islamic party Tareq al-Hashemi said that citizens are taking the position of self defense, noting that the security situation in the country is violent and that there is what he described as a great conspiracy to destroy the country.

Hashimi added that the Sadrist Trend (follower of Muqtada al-Sadr) said it does not belong to the militias which attacked the Sunni mosques, commending during his meeting with a delegation from the Trend its help to ensure the protection of certain mosques.

This coincided with thousands of Iraqis taking the streets in massive demonstrations in several Iraqi cities following Friday's prayers deploring acts of sectarianism and calling for national unity and not to be dragged to a civil war.

The demonstrations were attended by citizens in each of Musil, north of Baghdad, and al-Hella, al-Kpoit, al-Amara, Karbala, and Basra where the demonstrators raised banners deploring the attacks on shrines, mosques and churches, deploring what they called terrorism in all its forms and colors.

Iraq had witnessed a wave of acts of sectarian violence that resulted in killing 130 Iraqis most of them are Sunni following the blowing up of the shrine of the "Golden Dome" which includes the two tombs of Imam Ali al-Hadi and his son al-Imam al-Askari in Samara.
