Lebanon inclined to expand investigations into the assassinations
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 2/22/2006

The Lebanese minister of Justice Charles Rizq announced that two Lebanese judges will be heading within days to the UN headquarters in New York in order to discuss the establishment of an international court to consider the assassination operations carried out in Lebanon. The assassinations include prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri and others.

In press statements issued on Tuesday, Rizq stressed that the inclination is that this court is to inspire its rules from the Lebanese law but with amendments expected to be imposed by the international community concerning the death penalty.

Lebanese judicial sources said that the two judges Ralf Reyashi and Shukri Sader will leave Lebanon on Thursday in a four-day mission in order to discuss the authority of the court and its departments.

The Lebanese delegation will hold a second round of talks with the advisor of the UN secretary general for legal affairs Nicola Michael and his work team which had a first round of talks in Beirut by the end of January this year. The talks fall in the course of implementing one article from the UN security council resolution number 1644 which states to found a court of an international nature in order to try all those who proved to be responsible for al-Hariri assassination and to expand the scale of the term of the International investigation committee which is chaired by the Belgian judge Sergi Brammrtez so as to include the attacks took place in Lebanon since the beginning of October 2004.

The US has welcomed, by its ambassador to Lebanon, the Lebanese step of sending a judicial delegation to New York and said it is ready to give help and consultation if Lebanon wishes so.
