Syria, Iraq to solve Iraqi assets issue
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 2/22/2006

Head of the Syrian Commercial Bank, Duraid Dirgham, said on Tuesday the Syrian and Iraqi sides are working together to solve the Iraqi assets issue in Syria.

In press statements, Dirgham hoped that the Syrian Commercial Bank would resume its activities with Iraq by serving the traders of both states, after resolving the file of overdue financial liabilities.

According to an agreement made between the Syrian-Iraqi governments the overdue amounts will be returned through the bank to the Syrian merchants, and currently the bank and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry are checking the congruency of reported overdues that the chambers.

The overdue amount of money belongs to Syrian merchants who exported commodities to the Iraqi markets during the oil-for-food period and were not able to receive their money because of the war circumstances.
