Aoun rejects call of March 14 Forces to foil Lahoud
Lebanon, Politics, 2/21/2006
The leader of the Christian opposition and Lebanese parliamentarian Michel Aoun warned parties of the parliamentary majority from resorting to demonstrations in order to push the president of the republic to resign.
In statements in his house north of Beirut on Monday, Aoun said that problems should be settled by means of dialogue. He added that the inclination to "call on people to take to the streets" is not acceptable because this is an overthrowing of the constitutional establishment.
These statements came one day after the announcement made by the chairman of the executive commission of the Lebanese forces Samir Jaajaa, on behalf of the Lebanese parliamentary side, that the battle to foil Lahoud "is on," noting that this effort will be made through collecting signatures of the parliamentarians in two petitions, and inviting the supporters of the so-called March 14 Forces (those gathered after the assassination of Rafiq al-Hariri) to move to topple Lahoud.
Aoun said the issue is a conflict over power. He held the government the responsibility of what will result of riots or bloodshed."
The leader of the Christian opposition stressed his objection "of any sort of violating the constitutional establishments," preferring the resignations of the parliament or the government.
Worthy mentioning that the Lebanese parliament extended in 2004 Lahoud's term of office for three extra years. The latter refused all calls to resign vowing to stay in his post until the last moment of his term of office.
