Haneya to be next Palestinian prime minister
Palestine, Politics, 2/21/2006

The chairman of the al-Taghieir Wal-Islah bloc (change and reforms) in the Palestinian legislative council, Mahmoud al-Zahar, said after a meeting by the Hamas movement leadership with the chairman of the Palestinian national authority Mahmoud Abbas in Gaza, that the leading Hamas figure Ismael Haneya will received today the "official notice of authorization" to preside over the next Palestinian government.

Henya will have five weeks to form the government. He said that his government is concerned to be open at the regional and international environment.

Hamas had started a series of consultations with the Palestinian groups in order to convince them to join a national coalition government. Al-Jazeera satellite tv said that the Islamic Jihad movement refused the request, while sources at the People's Front For The Liberation Of Palestine considered that there is a vast area of common ground which allow to join work in the future with Hamas.

The spokesman for Hamas in the Palestinian legislative council Salah al-Bardawil said in statements that there is "common ground" with the program proposed by Abbas, and stressed that despite of that, there are still differences especially in regard to the foreign policy and this will be discussed.

Concerning the Palestine liberation organization, Fatah, al-Bardawil said they had agreed, in principle to negotiate with Hamas, but a date for the meeting was not set.

On the other hand, the Palestinian government chose on Monday the current chairman of the Palestine preventive security department col. Rashid Abu Shabak to assume the post of the national security directorate, the department which includes the police, national defense and preventive security.

Abbas is expected to approve the appointment of Abu Shabak who will be the first figure to assume this post after Abbas had issued a decree to combine 11 Palestinian security departments into three.
