Mufti calls Europe to issue law preventing religions harm
Syria-European Union, Politics, 2/17/2006
Syria's Grand Mufti of the Republic has called on Thursday to issue an international law forbidding the infliction of damage to the peoples holy issues and religions as well any thing that might offend them calling Europe to stand by this demand.
In a meeting with directors of the Political Affairs and the Middle East Directorate in the Austrian foreign ministry, Sheikh Ahmed Badriddin Hassuon urged to adopt the policy of dialogue and understanding among religions, the respect of peoples' beliefs instead of opening the door of conflict. asserting at the same time rejection infringing on Muslims holy issues under the pretext of freedom of expression.
Meantime, the Mufti criticized the mass media, "which made the crisis worse rather than calling to keep patience underling refusal of the null US accusations to Syria that claimed she has a role in exacerbating protest against cartoons insulting the Prophet Mihammed."
During his meeting, the Mufti noted that Syria has apologized to Denmark as a government and people following riot actions that took place in front of the Danish embassy in Damascus to protest the cartoons.
The Mufti arrived in Vienna yesterday to meet an invitation from Austria's foreign minister whose country presides the European Union and to take part at conference hosted by Austria to hold the emerged crisis due to cartoons insulting the Prophet Mohammed.
The Mufti clarified earlier in an interview to the Austrian radio the need to start dialogue between Europe and the Islamic world as to control the cartoons crisis.
He criticized "a third party that is trying to destabilize the situation and does not want the intercultural dialogue noting that the western media is conveying an untrue image of our civilization and religion."
