Jaafari deplores new Abu Ghreib torture photographs

The Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari on Thursday deplored acts of torture in Abu Ghreib prison shown by an Australian TV station, and said that officials responsible for these acts were punished.

A statement by Jaafari's office quoted an official source that the practices seen in the recent photos resulted in the trial of the criminals

Worthy mentioning that 10 American soldiers were tried over the committed practices in Abu Ghreib and many of them were sentenced to ten year imprisonment.

For his part, the Iraqi national security advisor Muwaffak al-Rubeii said he will discuss the issue of the photographs with the American authorities, noting that the practices mentioned "do not help the establishment of good relations between the coalition forces and the Iraqi forces."

Lt. gen. Wafiq al-Samere, advisor for the Iraqi President Jalal al-Talibani considered that all practices made at the hands of the American soldiers of acts of torture were not justified.
