Syrian reaction to Junblat statement
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 2/15/2006
In reaction to Lebanese opposition Druze leader Walid Junblat's attack against the Syrian president and describing him as a terrorist, the chief clergy of the Druze sect in Syria Hussein Jarbou' denounced on Tuesday evening such a description, considering that "Junblat and his bosses are the terrorists."
Junblat had said on the occasion of the assassination anniversary of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri that Syria's President Bashar al-Assad is a "terrorist."
Jarbour said that Junblat only represents himself. He added "the terrorist is the one who said that Israel was not our enemy," in remarks to an earlier statement by Junblat in which he considered that the Syrian regime is his enemy at the meantime.
He added "Junblat's words are categorically rejected because he is the enemy of the Arab homeland as a whole. We the Druze in Syria hold ourselves as not related to him and also the Druze community in Lebanon has no link to him because he does not represent any true Druze."
