A training course opened on Tuesday at the Damascus-based Headquarters of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) on Rainwater Harvesting Techniques with the cooperation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The 15-day course, attended also by 15 specialists from the Ministry of Water Resources in Iraq, will deal with issues related to water harvesting, the optimal, modern methods for water investment, mathematical examples in designing water harvesting and the use of geographical data systems in this field.

Director General of ACSAD, Hassein al-Aswad, said in a speech opening the course that his Center works persistently to improve Arab agriculture products and the optimal investment of every drop of water on the Arab land.

He added the Center serves as an Arab house of expertise that puts all its available capabilities and scientific researches in the service of Arab Agriculture. He expressed hope the course would be useful in this regard.

The www.acsad.org was established in Damascus, Syria in 1968. ACSAD is a specialized Arab organization working within the framework of the League of Arab States with the objective of unifying the Arab efforts which aim to develop the scientific agricultural research in the arid and semi-arid areas, help in the exchange of information and experiences and make use of the scientific progress and the modern agricultural techniques in order to increase the agricultural production.

The work of ACSAD is supervised by a General Assembly composed of the ministers of agriculture from the member states of ACSAD and an elected Executive Council consisting of seven representatives of seven Arab states. ACSAD specialized divisions include Soil Studies and Water Uses, Water Studies, Animal Wealth Studies, Plant Studies, Economy and Planning and the Financial and Administrative Affairs.

The main mission of ACSAD is to face the challenge imposed by the arid and semi-arid environments which are characterized by fragile farming systems through the provision of scientific and applied data and advanced techniques in a way that allows the large-scale implementation of the tasks of the agricultural and social development and the optimum exploitation of the renewable natural resources in the arid areas.
