Lebanon remembers today Hariri's assassination
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 2/14/2006

The Lebanese people celebrate today the first anniversary of the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, at a time when the occasion is expected to witness peaceful and massive marches in all parts of the country.

Night prayers were held during which candles were lit on Monday evening amid tough security measures at the site where Hariri was murdered one year from today. Most of the residential buildings in the capital put candles on their balconies, demonstrating their celebration of this anniversary despite the heavy rainfall.

Cars wrapped by Lebanese flags took the streets of the capital Beirut calling via loudspeakers the people of the city to take part in today's remembrance marches.

The streets of Beirut were filled with banners honoring Hariri who assumed the presidency of the Lebanese cabinet for five times, and played a key role in rebuilding the city after the end of the civil war which took place in Lebanon between 1975- 1990.

On March 14, 2005 almost one million Lebanese gathered, belonging to various religious sects in Lebanon to demonstrate in protest over the murder of Hariri as well as over the Syrian military presence in the country.
