Consultations to form Iraqi government
Iraq, Politics, 2/14/2006
Sami al-Askari, member in the United Shiite Coalition said that the Shiite and the Kurds started official consultations to form the new Iraqi government.
Al-Askari explained that the distribution of the ministerial bags among the winning lists in the elections, will be according to the election results, noting that the coalition will not give on asking for the seat of the ministry of interior.
Sunni and Kurdish sides expressed reservations on the selection of the Shiite coalition, Ibrahim Jaafari as a prime minister for a first permanent Iraqi government.
The Arab Sunni set a precondition of "dismantling the Shiite militias" in order to take part in Jaafari government. Zafer al-Ani, the spokesman for the Iraqi al-Tawafuk Front said that dismantling the militias should be a substantive rather the a symbolic act.
Al-Ani said "we have some reservations not on the person of Jaafari himself, rather on the formation of the former government which he had presided, noting that the government formation concerning security had been irresponsible."
The Arab Sunni accuse the ministry of interior, which they allege as controlled by the Shiite militias, of allowing specialized teams to execute and torture citizens, working freely, unpunished. A matter denied by the Jaafari government.
