Shiite coalition choose Jaafari for Iraq's prime minister
Iraq, Politics, 2/13/2006

The Iraqi interim prime minister Ibrahim Jaafaari was nominatedby the United Iraqi Coalition bloc for the post of prime minister who will serve a four-year term of office.

A source at the coalition said that the result of voting selection showed that al-Jaafari got 64 votes with 63 votes for the current interim President Adel Abdul al-Mahdi. Some indicated the possibility of al-Mahdi's would have been chosen for the post if the selection was made through agreement rather than voting.

Electing Jaafari as a prime minister on Sunday came to close differences that lasted for weeks after four figures competed for the position, all of them from the United Shiite Coalition, which represents the largest bloc inside the parliament. This coalition has 128 seats out of the 275 total seats of the parliament. Jaafari is a member in al-Dawa (call) party. It is a major partner in the coalition. It also wins the support of the Muqtada al-Sadr supporters and its allied group in the National Assembly (parliament).

As from now, Jaafari has to start his efforts to form a new government amid expectations that this will take a long time because of the complications of the political scene, and the nature of alliances, and the deterioration of the security conditions.

Each of the UN, the European Union and the Arab league appealed the Iraqi leaders to speedily form a new government that would include all social groups of the Iraqi society.
