Khaddam, Bayanouni send signals to internal opposition
Syria, Politics, 2/9/2006
The Syrian opposition figure and political science professor at Arkansas University, Najib al-Ghadban, said that what had accelerated the meeting between the Muslim Brothers and one of the symbols of the Syrian regime that oppressed the Muslim Brothers is the acceleration of developments on the Syrian arena, including the Syrian crisis in Lebanon, and the desire to know the impact of Syria's former vice president Abdul Halim Khaddam joining the opposition against the Syrian regime.
Ghadban said that by meeting with Khaddam, the Syrian opposition wanted to let sides inside the Syrian regime know "that those who had not been involve in mistakes (of the regime)" can join the opposition without fear of revenge, especially since Khaddam so far did not give an apology for having been part of the regime, and that the opposition did not set precondition that he apologies first, before they would work with him, after it had conditioned dealing with symbols of the Syrian regime to their non involvement in human rights violations and corruption. The same matter which prevented it (the opposition)from dealing with exiled Rafaat al-Assad so far.
