Khaddam, Syria Muslim Brothers intensify pressure on al-Assad regime
Syria, Politics, 2/9/2006

The general observer of the Muslim Brothers group in Syria, Ali Sader Eddine al-Bayanouni, and Syria's former vice president Abdul Halim Khaddam agreed to intensify pressure on the Syrian regime and to contact the opposition so as to approve a common vision "to rescue Syria."

The two men agreed in a statement that crowned their meeting in Brussels on Wednesday on the need to work "with other national forces and to convene joint meetings with them, including those who were part of the Damascus Declaration, in order to unify their ranks and reach a common work formula for rescuing Syria from the crisis it suffers."

The "Damascus Declaration", a group of opposition parties sand figures, had issued in October 2005 a declaration called for "democratic and fundamental change" in the existing regime. and was supported by the Muslim Brothers group.

The statements also held the Syrian regime responsible for what Syria had suffered but stressed rejection to foreign intervention in the internal affairs of Syria and that "the change is the responsibility of the Syrians in order to get rid off the corrupt and tyrant regime and establishing a democratic regime."
