Saudi Arabia turns away Egyptian ferry
Saudi Arabia-Egypt, Local, 2/8/2006
The Saudi Arabian authorities on Tuesday prevented the passengers of one Egyptian ferry from getting on it after it was found out it is unsafe. This comes after the a ferry sunk in the Red Sea water killing many.
One official in the Saudi Jeddah port said "the ferry reached Daba port about midnight Monday, we examined it and found it in a very bad condition. It was old," noting that "al-Salam 94" was forced to return back to the Egyptian Swiss port without passengers."
The captain of the sunken ferry "Saint Catherine" Salah Jumaa told the Egyptian daily al-Ahram "I had taken a decision not to return back in order to preserve the lives of 1800 passengers who were with me in Saint Catherine ferry, of fears that the ferry may flip, especially because of the bad weather conditions and the height of waves was very difficult to imagine."
