Nawaf al-Ahmad crown prince, Nasser al-Sabah prime minister in Kuwait
Kuwait, Politics, 2/8/2006
The ruler of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah issued an Emir ' decree in which he nominated his brother, the minister of interior, Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah as a crown prince.
According to another decree, he appointed his brother, the minister of the Emir's court, Sheikh Nasser al-Muhammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah as a prime minister and assigned him to select the new cabinet.
The announcement of the two posts of the crown prince and the cabinet came after consultations Sheikh Sabah started days before during which he had met with prominent figures with the ruling Sabah family.
He had also met with the chairman of the Kuwaiti Ummah council Jasem al-Khurafi and three of his predecessors: Ahmad Zeid al-Sarhan, Muhammad Youssef al-Adasani and Ahmad Abdul Aziz al-Sadoun.
The government, which had been headed since 2003 by Sheikh Sabah until the two posts of the crown prince and the prime minister were separate posts, submitted its resignation last Monday after Sheikh Sabah became the ruler of Kuwait.
The opposition and parliamentarians call for keeping the two posts of the prime minister and the crown prince separate in order to enable the parliament to interrogate the government freely.
