18 killed in confrontations between Yemeni forces, Houthi supporters
Yemen, Politics, 2/7/2006
Some 18 rebels from the supporters of Bader Eddine al-Houthi and five soldiers in the Yemeni army were killed in renewed confrontations on Monday in Sadah governorate, northwest of the country, according to Yemeni military sources.
According to local sources, the government forces were able on December 2005 to retake control the two mountains of al-Beida and Qouhab in al-Nashour area in al-Safraa directorate.
The sources said that followers of al-Houthi were able to damage one tank for the army in al-Talah area, 12 km from Sadah city, after an attack they had launched against the government forces from three areas.
In their attacks, the supporters of al-Houthi targeted the houses of tribal chiefs and men supporting the government forces.
Scores were killed and others injured in similar confrontations that took place in December 2005 between al-Houthi supporters and the government forces under top secrecy to avoid news leaking on that.
These confrontations came after the announcement made by the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh by the end of September of a general pardon for al-Houthi supporters. But the sources confirmed that most of the released men of al-Houthi followers joined their young colleagues in the mountains.
Worthy mentioning that Bader Eddine al-Houthi was killed on September 5, 2004 during confrontations with the government forces after he had led an armed rebellion lasting 80 days in Sada area in the Summer of that year.
